In Buddhist philosophy, "form is emptiness" does not mean the material world disappears, it means that all things exist in interdependence, with no fixed or separate identity. This diptych explores two visions of the same truth. In one, a mountain rises through clouds toward golden light, a bird ascending into clarity. In the other, a lighthouse stands resolute in storm and darkness, its beams cutting through rain and thunder. Both images ask the same question: how do we move through difficulty? The mountain shows transcendence, the soaring above. The lighthouse shows persistence, the standing firm. Together they suggest that awakening is not one response but many. You can rise toward light, or shelter in depth, or find stillness while the storm passes. What persists through both is the choice to see clearly, whether through ascent or through the storm itself.

More about the artist

Aritoaru is based in Hiroshima and works across Japanese brushes, fountain pens, and digital tools. Their practice is rooted in the aesthetic of subtraction—the Japanese principle that meaning emerges from simplicity and restraint. For this piece, they began with mountains and a lighthouse painted on drawing paper, rendered fine lines in fountain pen, then scanned and completed the work digitally. The result is a conversation between handmade mark-making and digital finish. Their broader practice explores the duality of experience: movement and rest, vastness and shelter, presence and emptiness. They draw from Japanese traditions including tea ceremony, haiku, and ukiyo-e, as well as childhood memory and observation.

The print is produced on premium stock and arrives ready to hang in a natural wood frame. The layering of hand-drawn detail and subtle digital colour creates depth that shifts with changing light, a quality that mirrors the work's philosophical foundation: form revealing emptiness, emptiness making form visible.
