Overview

Kayo Shinbu works from Ashikaga in Japan's Tochigi Prefecture, moving between monochrome line drawing and detailed watercolor painting depending on what a piece calls for. Their illustrations have appeared in books, magazines, product packaging, and textiles, commissioned by small independent shops and larger publications alike. They describe drawing simply as the thing they love most, and their work carries thatdirectness: clean, legible images that stay warm even where the ideas underneath run heavier.

Process & inspiration

Shinbu's range is genuinely wide. Some work leans into dense, cross-hatched linework built from a fine pen, high in contrast and detail. Other pieces take a looser, warmer line, hand-drawn and unhurried. Elsewhere, the work flattens into bold, considered color, simplified shapes locked together by heavy outline, flat and graphic. "From monochrome line drawings to realistic watercolor paintings, I can handle a wide range of styles," they say of their own practice, and the work itself bears that out. For Shinbu, medium and finish are choices made fresh for each commission.
